Well...crap

Okay, it has come to my attention that the textures I have been using so far for the maps have not been the same textures used in the actual game, as can be seen in the picture below

(Click for full size)

My question is, do you guys like the color pallet I've been using so far, or would you rather I change it to match the actual game's color? Use the poll on the right to select your answer, winner decides the look of the game.

I voted for the current colors even though I enjoy the originals better because it seems like it will take too long to redo all the textures. I think the current one is good enough. Good luck with continuing the game!

Well I like yours better!

I love current color, too!
It's more lovely!

keep the colors you have, the DX colors take away the details, and besides, you're making a better version of an already superb gaming experience.

my hat goes off to you and all you have done so far.

p.s. if you could find a way to port this to the psp, you would make a lot of people happy :)

I personally like the softer and subdued colours you're using. It's easier to look at than the massive contrast of shades on the original.

I voted for your colors because neither version will look "like" the original, as your game will be played on a much bigger, backlit screen.

The Current LA3D pallet is more realistic, the original palette too massiv. Stay at your work and don´t worry about it.

I agree with SteelWolf89. A Port to Sony psp would be the #1 of all homebrews ever made.

I have choose the LADX ROM colors since I found the LA3D being sometimes insipid (sorry, the word might be to rash, but in French I would say "fade"). Some looks better in LA3D, other better in LADX.

However, I would be quite be happy by simply having a 3D version of Zelda, so there more or less no point in changing that :)

I like the current best. I never played the dx version and as Christopher Maples pointed out, the details are higher in your current so I think it would be a better treatment of the game.

I think the colors you have are great. Also, when are we going to be getting a BETA?

I doubt I will be making a PSP port, other then bug fixes, some extra new content, and general post-release support, I plan on devoting most of my time towards a new game.
However, the intent is to make LA3D very mod friendly and open source, so if someone with the know how to do a PSP port wants to, they will have access to everything they need.

As for the next beta, at the moment I am the only modeler on the team, and I've been focused on the dungeons, once they are done I will turn my attention to modeling and animating all the stuff needed for a beta that would actually somewhat resemble the final game. A public beta IS coming, but not until there is enough content to make it enjoyable.

Too bad that the current colours are winning, as personally I think that those faded colours is too much of that whole 'next-gen graphics less colourful is more realistic'-mindset, as the game's original graphics doesn't try to be realistic; even when using 3D graphics then they're still simplistic and cartoony, so I think the original colourfulness fits that better :B That and the faded colours make the third screen look like a dull desert or something :V

However, as baldurien said, just getting Link's Awakening in 3D is awesome enough on its own, so the palette ain't something I'mma complain much about, just felt the need to put that out there :V

Oh yeah, btw, you opening up the possibilities for modding and psp porting is just awesome :D

Depending on your engine, can't you just use palletized textures ? which means you could use both depending on what the user wants ? (just swap the pallet, the texture doesn't matter)

o btw i vote the DX colors, since its the original

The faded colors are much more easy on the eyes. Please keep them.

Using the colors you have now makes the game more distinct from the original.

RupeeClock said...

Just keep them as is.

A simple post-processing shader could easily correct the colours, just by increasing contrast and saturation a few notches, right? :)

Eric I. said...

Yeah, but a shader will make it's usage unnecessarily high, and I for one don't have a very good processor or video card.

The current faded textures look more nostalgic to the original gameboy game. stick with them, and change the textures you don't like after you finish the game if you really want to. (also you can leave out the DX color dungeons for all I care). I trust your taste. keep up the epic work!

I like the low saturated one.

Keep the colours as they are. If you feel like it at the end of the project, I doubt anyone would complain if you made an alternate version of the game with the original colours, but after coming this far, I don't see the point in changing. You've set up a style, so I'd say stick with it.

I agree with everyone here who has said that it doesn't really matter, 'cause you're making Link's Awakening in 3D. The DX version colours would be nice, and would look better, but honestly that's not really as important.

wow, i hadn't expected so many people to be behind a psp port being made.

maybe you could talk to some of the guys over on 'MOD DB', they might know a thing or two about making a psp version once everything is in order for a pc beta.

Use the original colors, please!! It's more cool.
